FAQ

Is there a dress code?

Students are expected to wear leotard and tights to class.  Leotards may be any color.  Tights should be pink for ballet and tap combination classes.  Tan tights are acceptable for jazz, hip-hop and lyrical classes.

Why do dancers have to wear leotard and tights?

It is very important to us to teach dance properly.  The only way we can do our job is if we can see the dancers.  Pink tights allow us to see the muscle development in the legs of the dancers.  Leotards, because they are form fitting allow the teacher to see the students abdomen, spine and rib cage to ensure proper alignment.

Where can I purchase dance attire?

There are many choices when it comes to shopping for dancewear.  Often leotards can be found at local stores such as Target, K-Mart, or Wal-Mart etc.  Tights may be purchased at the studio or some other local store.  In the fall, shoes for younger dancers can be found at Pay Less or Wal-Mart.  For older students and for more advanced dancers we recommend going to a dancewear store for shoes.  The one we use most often is Toe to Toe dancewear on Hill Road in Flint.  They have information on our studio requirements.

What kind of shoes do I need for class?

Ballet classes require pink ballet shoes

Tap classes require black tap shoes

Jazz classes require tan slip on jazz booties

Hip-Hop classes require black dance sneakers or plain black tennis shoes
Lyrical classes require tan lyrical shoes or bare feet

Required Dance Attire

Girls: One piece, solid colored leotard with pink tights, pink ballet shoes, black tap shoes.  If you take jazz please purchase tan jazz shoes.

Boys: Black dance pants and white t-shirt with black tap shoes and black jazz shoes.

Adults: Comfortable dance clothing.  (dance pants, dance tops, leotards, skirts, capris, etc.)

What Parents Should Know

If most dance studios seem to have friendly teachers, experience teaching children, and a big show at the end of the year, aren't they all pretty much the same?  Does it really matter which place you decide to enroll at?  YES!  There are 4 main things that can make a huge difference in the quality of instruction your child receives, the amount of extra hassles the parents must deal with and the overall enjoyment and satisfaction of being involved with a dance program.  Here are 4 things every parent should consider before deciding on a dance studio for their child.

1.  Are the facilities suited for dance education?

Dance is a very physical activity that requires a lot of jumping, which can put stress on the bones and joints.  The best way to prevent against potential injury is by choosing a studio with wood dance floors.  In addition, young dancers need mirrors in order to have the maximum visibility of the teacher to ensure that the proper technique is being learned.

All of our studios are air conditioned, have wood floors, and mirrors from ceiling to floor so your child has the best conditions in which to learn.

2.  What is the size of the class?

If the dance class has fewer students in it each child will receive more personalized attention, learn more and have more fun.  With younger students it is easier for the teacher to maintain control over the class and make sure each student understands the concepts and instructions.  A smaller class size also allows teachers to ensure that students are not developing bad habits or improper technique.

Our studio limits all of our classes to a maximum of 12 students per class for children under 9 years of age.

3.  Can I get immediate assistance and customer service?

In many studios the teacher or the studio owner conducts classes and does the administration.  By trying to do two jobs at once, the class may suffer as the teacher has to use class time for customer service issues, or the studio may have no customer service available if the teacher is in a class.  To have a good experience it is important to choose a studio that can assist you with details like costumes or schedules, even if the teacher is occupied in a class.

Our studio has office staff on hand during regular class times so you get assistance when you need it.

4.  Does the studio provide a quality dance education in a wholesome environment?

A great dance experience starts with the teacher and the studio environment.  To be qualified, teachers need to remain current regarding the newest techniques, styles and safety precautions.  Many studios simply hire teenage dancers to teach their youngest classes without regard for the developmental needs of younger children.  Others may hire people with only minimal dance experience.

In addition, quality dance education includes the development of skills necessary for life as well as dance.  A well rounded study in dance incorporates life skills such as discipline, creativity, communication skills, turn taking, time management, self esteem, joy, and life-long fitness to name a few.

Out studio conducts our sessions in such a way as to promote high self worth and maintain high moral standards.  As we challenge the dancer to reach his or her highest individual potential, we also realize that learning is an individual process and is accomplished at various rates.  Through our program the whole child is enhanced, physically, emotionally, and intellectually.  In addition, our studio will use age appropriate music, choreography, and costumes.  Our staff is highly qualified and love working with children of all ages.
